How to compare transports in different systems/clients

Overview

  • Rev-Trac provides the reporting tool, Comparison report, to show all transports present in a particular system and client that are not present in another system and client.

  • The report is useful to:

    • Help identify actions needed to match one system/client with another.

    • Determine what transports need to be imported into a test system after it's been refreshed.

  • The report can be run in Web GUI and SAP GUI.

  • You can save the transports listed in the report to a transport list (only in SAP GUI).

Please refer to the desired section for instructions and details.

Web GUI

Steps

  1. From the dashboard, select Comparison report.

  2. Specify both systems and clients to be compared. To use any landscape snapshot for comparison, please refer to Using landscape snapshots for comparison below for instructions.

  3. To add more selection criteria, click on Add button next to Filters. A list of filters is displayed.

  4. Complete the desired filters and click OK. The Add button is replaced with Edit and Clear buttons.

  5. To change the filters, click on Edit. To clear all filters, click on Clear.

  6. Select Search. The report below shows the transports that are currently present in QAS/200 that don't exist in QAS/300.

Using landscape snapshots for comparison

  1. If you choose to use any landscape snapshot for comparison, you must click the Add button next to Filters and select Snapshot ID.

  2. Type one of the following ID that represents the day the information was captured: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

  3. If you select just one snapshot, you will be comparing the snapshot of that client against the current state of the other client. If you select snapshots for both clients, you will be comparing between their snapshots for a particular day.

  4. Click OK. See the example below.

Example

To find out transports currently present in QAS/200 but did not exist in QAS/300 last Tuesday, select Use snapshot for QAS/300 and click on Add button next to Filters.

Select Snapshot ID and complete the parameters as shown in the example below.

SAP GUI

Steps

From Rev-Trac Console, select Comparison report in the Migration section from Rev-Trac Console (see the example below). Alternatively, go to menu path Migration > Reports > Comparison.

The report can be generated using either live data or historic data from a landscape snapshot.

A landscape snapshot contains information of what transports are present on every 24 hours basis, in what systems and clients in the Rev-Trac landscape. Each snapshot is saved with an ID indicating the day of the week the information was captured (i.e. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Last Monday's snapshot is overwritten by this Monday's snapshot, and so on. As a result, there are no more than seven daily snapshots stored in the system at any one time.

Below is an example of the output.

The option Ignore transports with quarantined or missing data files may be useful if you do not want to include in your report transports that have already been quarantined.

For example, you have identified and quarantined transports that are unsuitable for reapplication to QAS following a refresh from PRD. Next, you can run the report to identify the transports that should be reapplied to QAS following its refresh from PRD, but do not want to include the quarantined transports.

Transport messages

If hybrid transports (which contain client independent and client dependent changes) are found, the comparison report may display transport messages in the Mesg column of the report. These codes are explained in the report legend.

  • (a) - Client independent part exists*
The comparison report in the above image shows the client-dependent part of the hybrid transport CNSK901556 (indicated by *(a) in the Mesg column) is present in QAS client 200, but not present in QAS 400.

  • (b) - Client independent part does not exist*
The client-independent component of a hybrid transport is not always present everywhere the client-dependent component is. In this situation, the report would show *(b) in the Mesg column.
Consider, for example, a situation where a cross-system client copy has occurred. This could result in the client-dependent component of a hybrid transport being present in the copy destination, but not the client independent part.

Creating Rev-Trac transport lists

A Rev-Trac transport list is a list of transports saved internally in Rev-Trac for later reuse.

Steps

  1. From the output screen of the report, go to menu path List > Transport lists. The 'Please enter list id' dialog is displayed.

  2. Complete the following fields:

    1. List

      1. Name of new transport list. Note: The name is limited to 8 characters.

    2. Title

      1. Title of new transport list.

  3. Select Create list, then click the Enter button on the dialog. An information dialog displays the number of entries inserted in the list.
